Career & Experience
Matt is a Partner in the firm’s Corporate team. He has significant experience advising corporate clients on the tax aspects of purchases and sales, including negotiating warranty and indemnity provisions, the restructuring of companies and groups of companies and employee incentives, including approved and unapproved share options and growth shares.
Matt has experience with share sales, asset sales, disposals to employee ownership trusts (including the surrounding structuring and creation of such trust), implementing and advising on EMI schemes, restructuring corporate groups, assorted direct and indirect tax issues and more.
Matt has advised real estate clients on the tax aspects of landlord and tenant matters, including lease grants, assignments and variations. He is also experienced in developer matters, including site acquisition, VAT and SDLT negotiation and purchases and sales.
Matt has advised public as well as private clients on a broad range of real estate tax issues, including SDLT, VAT, the construction industry scheme, ATED, capital allowances, income tax, corporation tax, and CGT.
Matt specialises in providing a rounded service, balancing the various tax issues and commercial positions to give clients clear, concise advice.
Outside of work, Matt is an avid cricket fan, and reluctant runner.
Work highlights
- Creation of an employee ownership trust for a client, followed by documenting the sale to the trust by the shareholders.
- Advising a real estate client on SDLT efficiencies where purchasing multiple dwellings together with commercial property and agreeing the treatment with HMRC, leading to a seven figure saving (prior to the change in law regarding SDLT multiple dwellings relief).
- Assisting the owner of a portfolio of companies with the sale of its portfolio to various buyers, including navigating the tax complexities of a recent restructure prior to sale.
