How do you choose which law firms to apply to?

Choosing the right law firm for you can feel daunting, there are so many to choose from it can be hard to know where to start. We've put together some advice on what to consider when you're doing your research and attending firm events to help you decide which firm's you'd flourish at.

Type of work and practice areas

Take a moment to have a think about whether there is a particular area of law you are interested in. Are you drawn to corporate law, or family law, or perhaps you know you’re destined to be an intellectual property lawyer? Or are you still unsure on what area you might like to specialise in? Make the time to properly research firms to understand their expertise and whether those areas align to your passions and strengths. It’s also important to keep an open mind, a training contract gives you an opportunity to experience a variety of different practice areas and see what breadth firms have to offer. Variety will mean that you can try a few areas before choosing where to specialise upon qualification. Make sure you understand the work that a firm does before you apply, and weave this understanding into your application to reflect your interest. Remember, this decision could influence your future career path, so choose a firm where you’ll be excited to work on cases that genuinely interest you.

Location, location, location

Where you work matters – both professionally and personally. In a hybrid working world office location does not always factor high on the list of needs, however when you are training there is a huge amount of value in being able to be in the office with supervisors, your wider team and your fellow trainees. Training contracts are two busy years and full of opportunities for you to throw yourself into, and so you want to make sure that you are in a city that suits you and how you like to balance your life. Consider the lifestyle you want and the legal market in each location. Do you want to be in the hustle of London, or would you prefer a city with a slightly different vibe? Do you want to move somewhere new for this next chapter of your career or do you love where you are and want to stay local?

Structure of the programme

Understanding the structure of a firm’s training programme is important. Some firms offer a traditional rotation system giving you exposure to a variety of practice areas, while others provide a more specialised approach where you gain deep knowledge in one area. With the introduction of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), the route to qualification is changing so ensure that you are clear on what approach the firm you are applying to is taking. If you aren’t clear, then make sure you ask! Additionally find out what extra opportunities a firm offers its trainees and think about your learning style and what experience you want to have. Look at the trainee intake size – larger intakes might offer more diverse experiences but could feel less personal, while smaller intakes might give you improved Partner contact time and a stronger trainee community. All important things to factor into your decision.

Culture, growth, and direction

Every firm has its own unique culture, which can affect your experience. Consider whether the firm’s values align with yours. Is the firm known for promoting the wellbeing of their employees, diversity, and inclusion, or fostering innovation? Make the most of opportunities to attend events put on by the firm to see how they live their values. Additionally, look at the firm’s growth trajectory and future direction. Joining a firm that’s expanding could offer more opportunities for career advancement, but it’s also important to feel that the firm’s culture and environment will support your development. Remember that you are not only applying for a training contract but choosing a place of work where you want to thrive.

By carefully considering these factors you can make a well-informed decision about where to apply. Focus your energy in applying to firms that align with both your professional goals and personal values. Remember, the right firm for you is one where you can learn, grow, and enjoy the start of your legal career.
