#EveryActionCounts this Race Equality Week 2025

Many barriers exist that can make it difficult to drive race equality. This can include a lack of understanding of the issues or how they affect others in the workplace. According to research by Race Equality Matters 77% of ethnically diverse employees feel more than 3 in 4 allies are not active allies. In response to this the theme of this year's Race Equality Week, #EveryActionCounts, has been all about turning good intentions into action.

Race Equality Week, organised by Race Equality Matters, brings together organisations and individuals across the UK to address the barriers to race equality in the workplace.

During the week, our Asian Connections and African & Caribbean Connections groups invited colleagues to take part in the Race Equality Matters 5-day Challenge to to learn more about elements of race inequality, and reflect on how they can make a commitment to take action.

The challenge encouraged allies to spend five minutes each day learning about intersectionality, inclusive language, recognising privilege and code switching. On day five, colleagues pledged one action to carry out beyond the week, and conversations were initiated around creating more inclusive spaces.

Acknowledging my privilege and listening and learning from the people around me who are directly impacted by racism and discrimination by diversifying my media intake to include their voices.

Rachel Griffith, Associate

Continuing to learn about more inclusive language around race and to encourage the use of inclusive language.

Emma Facey, Principal Director

Being more aware of the impact race inequality has on me and my confidence at work, but not letting that hold me back, keep me from taking up space, or feel the need to code switch to feel accepted.

Chloe-Ann Roberts-Hawkey, Associate and co-lead of the Asian Connections group

Connections group members also shared their thoughts and experiences around the themes to help bring them to life for colleagues.

We can all actively promote race equality. This year’s theme #EveryActionCounts is a reminder that every action no matter how small can lead to a sea of change.

Jhenna Mortimer, Paralegal and co-lead of the African and Caribbean Connections group
