Reclaiming narratives this Black History Month

We've been exploring the theme of 'Reclaiming narratives' with our African and Caribbean Connections group for Black History Month 2024. Black History Month in the UK is celebrated every October and provides an important platform to recognise and reflect on the contributions of Black individuals and communities. The month invites everyone to participate in the celebration of Black culture, to learn from the past and to contribute to a more equitable future. Plus, it fosters understanding and compassion, paving the way for a society that values diversity and inclusion for all.

“As someone who first came to the UK as an international student, I sometimes find it difficult to reconnect with my roots simply because of being so far away from home. But the African and Caribbean Connections group at Foot Anstey gives me a way to tap into parts of my culture through initiatives such as Black History Month, which is quite refreshing and encouraging.”

A highlight for us this year was our firmwide webinar which explored microaggressions. Often, it’s hard to know when innocent chatter or actions turn into something more harmful and unwanted. Our webinar panel discussed real life examples of what microaggressions might look like in the workplace and in our personal lives and looked at the role of allies in these situations. It was a great way for colleagues to be able to ask questions in a safe space. This encouraged an open and honest discussion about situations that people may avoid for fear of ‘getting in wrong’ and provided an opportunity to increase understanding of what microaggressions are and the impact they can have on individuals.

“The recent panel discussion enabled honest conversations around the topic of microaggressions which used anonymous polls and questions to explore often avoided topics. The engagement was really encouraging to see and promotes a cohesive and healthy work environment rooted in respect for difference.”

Jhenna Mortimer, Paralegal

Members of our African & Caribbean Connections group also shared their experience of reclaiming narratives with us through our Connections Unplugged internal podcast. Our Black History Month episodes explored narratives that surround being Black in Britain and how they are changing over time. They were a great way to understand different perspectives, the roles of allies, and much more.
