Career & Experience

Suriya is a construction lawyer and our net zero construction lead. Suriya’s practice tackles the complex issues surrounding climate change in the built environment, a particularly big emitter of 25% of total UK greenhouse gas emissions. She does this by focusing on solutions, such as climate aligned contracting, and the emergence of technology platforms (and innovations) that support our transition towards monitoring & reducing emissions, carbon capture storage or sequestration.

Suriya’s core technical specialism is to advise clients on a range of non-contentious construction matters. Her experience covers renewable energy and built environment related developments, waste, utility & infrastructure projects. Her broad experience means Suriya considers cross-sector synergies as critical to facilitating contract/commercial solutions.

Her clients include renewable energy developers, sustainability-focused data platforms & start-ups, and also, private sector developers, housing associations and landlords/tenants.

Suriya strategically charts contractual routes based on the client’s appetite for risk, third party involvement, sustainability requirements (e.g. TCFD / ISSB reporting) and supply chain issues (including due diligence matters – e.g. CDP).

In order to strategically deliver a project, Suriya engages with the client’s team early in order to respond fully and properly to their objectives, and enjoys building lasting and positive client relationships.

Suriya is a member of the The Chancery Lane Project’s Built Environment advisory board. She is also a CBI Infrastructure board member.

In her spare time Suriya enjoys travelling and listening to excellent podcasts on tackling the climate crises or in geo-political analysis.
