Harassment in Retail 2025

At Foot Anstey, we’ve been tracking the experiences of retail workers since 2021, building a comprehensive picture of harassment in the sector.

Our latest 2025 survey shows how far the industry has come – and where urgent challenges remain.

Retail harassment in 2025: progress made, problems remain

Many of us have seen retail crime and harassment with our own eyes – shoplifting, abusive language and even violence are no longer rare events in shops across the UK.

Our 2025 survey shows clear progress has been made: grievances are at their lowest level yet (just 9% compared with 20% in 2021), fewer staff feel unsupported by their employers and stress linked to workplace behaviour is beginning to ease. But the challenges are far from over.

What were our key findings?

More than a quarter of retail workers still report physically aggressive or violent behaviour at work, with LGBTQ+ staff disproportionately affected. Our data highlights where retailers must now focus their efforts to better protect their people.
