Chambers 2018 Firm LogoFoot Anstey is well known for having the strongest editorial team outside London. We act for a majority of the regional and local press in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as national newspapers, magazine publishers, radio broadcasters, digital television broadcasters, independent TV producers and online publishers.

Our Editorial & Regulatory Media team advise publishers on all aspects of content management including pre-publication copy checking, post-publication complaints, litigation, and compliance with the codes of the Press Complaints Commission, the Advertising Standards Authority and Ofcom. As well as being experts in libel, we also regularly advise on contempt of court, human rights, all aspects of privacy law (including breach of confidence), reporting restrictions, data protection, freedom of information, lotteries and promotions.

Crucially, we apply the law in a commercially aware way, to ensure that we give advice which is consistent with the business goals of our clients. It's not surprising that we are the first choice for many media companies.

We are able to provide advice 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, and deliver high-quality advice at short notice. Our ethos is to work with journalists, editors, and publishers.

In addition to editorial issues, the team also advises publishers if they become involved in non-editorial disputes. We regularly advise clients who become involved in this kind of litigation, usually involving breaches of contract, but also in respect of disputes based on other legal principles. The issues which arise are varied; examples of past cases range from disputes over leaflet distribution, claims from large advertisers, and litigation over the performance of printing presses.

As a result of our knowledge and experience, members of the team regularly speak at seminars and conferences. Tony Jaffa was asked to give evidence to the Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport, to contribute to the Ministry of Justice's working party for the reform of the law of libel and to participate in the revision of the Pre-Action Protocol for Defamation.

A satisfied client comments: "They're excellent - they always provide advice quickly, always meet deadlines, understand the level of risk we want to operate at and advise us accordingly." Chambers 2018

Tony Jaffa offers pre-publication and legal clearance services to a host of regional news publishers, and also handles significant disputes. Sources confirm he is "very established in this field, particularly in relation to defending local newspapers." Chambers 2017
