UK leading firm 2017Foot Anstey's Sport and Stadia Unit combines a wide range of expertise relevant to our sports clients including commercial contracts, regulatory, betting, media, intellectual property rights management, technology and data protection, employment and tax. Our lawyers have considerable knowledge of the sports industry, and are used to dealing with its various governing bodies both in the UK and internationally.

The Unit has many years' experience acting for clients across a number of sports industries including in particular football and rugby union clubs and players, sailors (including extensive experience of Americas Cup campaigns) and cycling. We act for clubs as well as individuals professionals, stadia and events management companies, media companies and governing bodies and associations.

Sports betting is an area of considerable growth. Clients of the Sports Unit include several online sports betting companies making use of Premier League images and themes, as well as Jockey Club Racecourses (who own Newmarket, Aintree, Haydock, Epsom and others) and Bath Racecourse.
We have also been awarded Preferred Partner status from the Football Safety Officers' Association.

Chris Pritchett

Chris has over 12 years' of experience acting for sporting clients, particularly in the football and horseracing industries.

Football - Chris has extensive experience in dealing with all the commercial and regulatory requirements of football stadia and clubs , including advice on:

  • Sponsorship and media agreements
  •  CCTV and data protection
  • Police costs disputes
  • Representation on SAGs
  • Premises Licensing alcohol and entertainment

Chris also has a long-standing relationship with the Football Safety Officers' Association, which has members from rugby league, rugby union, racing and motorsport. He regularly advises members on a wide range of legal issues and speaks at the Association's twice-yearly conferences.

Racing - Chris has acted for most of the major racecourses (including Ascot, Aintree, Newmarket and Newbury) and the Racecourse Association on a wide range of matters including betting and gaming advice, advice on security and stewarding and crowd safety, licensing, commercial contracts/supply chain and environmental issues.

Jonathan has extensive experience advising a wide range of clients in the sports sector, including:


Professional Sailing - Jonathan acted for the British Americas Cup team GBR Challenge from 2001 to 2007 advising on procurement of yacht and sail design software and related technologies for the 2007 Campaign, advising on numerous sponsorship deals with suppliers and partner organisations, advising on marketing agency agreements, yacht and asset sale agreements as well as advising on terms and interpretation of the America's Cup Class Rules.

Horse Racing - Advising Racecourse Association on various media rights agreements and network agreements with BT plc and Racing UK Limited.

Rugby Union – Advising Orange Personal Communications Services in relation to its sponsorship and media rights agreements with the European (Heineken) Cup and the Parker Pen Shield.

International Cricket - Acting for Gunn & Moore in its sponsorship of international cricket players, including Marcus Trescothick, and Michael Vaughan.

Premiership football – Acting for Emailvision plc in relation to the outsourcing of direct marketing and email management systems and associated services by Manchester United plc and Chelsea Football Club.

Government Sports Funding Arrangements - Advising numerous education sector clients on the terms of various funding agreements with Sport England for the provision of sports facilities throughout the United Kingdom.
