What you'll do

We are currently seeking to recruit a motivated and experienced Commercial Associate (3 years +  PQE) to join our growing and ambitious team. Based from Bristol or Exeter with a blend of home and office working available to you, this is an excellent opportunity to work directly with Partner Alexandra Hammond and the team on a variety of general commercial matters. You'll be working with existing and new clients, including household names and highly successful regional and national businesses, with a focus on the retail and consumer sector. Day to day, you will also have the opportunity to supervise and support junior lawyers and a trainee, advising clients on their strategies and documentation regarding supply chains, online trading, consumer relations and brand protection, as well as supporting clients with contracts which govern their operational infrastructure. In addition, you will be working collaboratively with our highly regarded Corporate team to provide your expertise and support where needed to undertake due diligence in M&A transactions.

In this role, you'll be responsible for providing support to General Counsels and their teams, taking the opportunity to work alongside our clients' inhouse legal functions and deliver advice directly to the business stakeholders, essentially acting as an extension of their team on a daily basis. We're excited to be able to offer secondment opportunities at all levels within the Commercial Team, something which we feel genuinely enhances our relationships with clients, our understanding of their business and the key issues affecting them. Our Associates are encouraged to develop their experience of working directly with clients, taking on responsibilities for driving client relationships forward to build strong professional connections with our commercial clients, and gain the insights and expertise needed to offer hands on, practical advice to them on an ongoing basis.

What we're looking for

As an experienced Commercial Lawyer, you will be seeking to further enhance your skills and knowledge whilst working with high quality clients in a supportive team. You will have already gained exposure to a wide variety of commercial matters, working independently with clients of differing size and profile, and you can demonstrate your positive and pragmatic approach to finding the right solutions in order to meet their business needs. We will expect you to engage and support junior lawyers and trainees in your work, delegating and supervising tasks to ensure that work is done at the right level whilst allowing you to focus on more complex matters. Teamwork is important to you and to us, and you know how to get the best from the people around you whilst maintaining high standards. You will be a strong communicator with good rapport building skills and the resilience to work under pressure by organising yourself effectively to meet deadlines as needed.

You may already be an Associate seeking to work with high quality clients with more exposure to complex work in order to broaden your skills or may have a background of working in an inhouse legal team. Previous experience of a secondment may be advantageous but is not essential. More important to us is your personal motivation to continue developing your skills with clients, seeking to understand the commercial context of their business and gaining confidence in order to provide relevant advice at the right moment. With your ability to forge lasting relationships with clients, you will be keen to create opportunities to further enhance your profile and that of the firm by engaging with a variety of business development opportunities.

The recruitment process
