Life at Foot Anstey

Henry Maples - First year trainee

Matt Gingell

I joined Foot Anstey as a first year trainee in September 2008 and have really enjoyed my time so far.

I graduated from Exeter University in Law with European Study and went on to do my LPC at the College of Law in Guildford last year.

From fairly early on at university I knew that I wanted to stay and work in the south west. My main hobbies are surfing, sailing and anything outdoors. The south west has it all in close proximity: sea, beaches, and moors. However I also needed a job which would be interesting and challenge me. It is no good living in a fantastic place if you dread going to work every day!

I joined Foot Anstey because it was very friendly and unique for a couple of reasons. It is a full service law firm which means there are seats available in whichever area of law that you are interested in, and the firm has a goal of becoming the premier firm in the south west and is serious about achieving it. It underpins this objective by providing offices in all the key south west locations and recognises that people want to “buy local”.

Since I have started in my first seat in the corporate commercial team I have already had contact with clients, been given important tasks under supervision and worked on a diverse range of cases from advising fishermen to drafting joint venture agreements. I would never get the same exposure to real life clients and interesting tasks if I was one of 250 trainees at a larger City firm.
