Local Law Trainees Win Prizes

Two Foot Anstey trainee solicitors have won prizes for their top marks in the Legal Practice Course.

Matthew Rose won the George Miles Prize, awarded to the top student at The University of the West of England. Matthew gained a joint honours degree in Philosophy and Sociology and then converted to law. At the prize giving Matthew met the donor of the prize, George Miles who also converted into law and had taught Matthew’s tutor.

James Goodwin achieved distinctions in all of his LPC exams. On the external examiners recommendation, The Devon & Somerset Law Society awarded the Sir George Fowler Prize 2008 to James for his academic achievement and commitment to the South West. The prize was endowed by Sir George Fowler who became a solicitor in 1879.

The Legal Practice course must be undertaken by all trainee solicitors before they can commence their formal training contract. The Legal Practice course lasts for one year.
Training contracts are a further two years and both must be completed before candidates are admitted as solicitors.

Louise Widley, partner and head of training at Foot Anstey said “These prizes are recognition of Matthew and James’ hard work and excellent exam results. We are delighted for them and look forward to further developing their skills and expertise throughout the entirety of their training contracts”.

“We provide an excellent training programme and ensure our trainees develop experience in advising businesses, organisations and individuals. Many of our trainees go on to become partners with us.

“We want to attract the best students so are pleased with the latest independent survey of training at law firms. They picked out that ‘everyone is just so focused and determined and forward thinking’ at Foot Anstey and ‘all are agreed on Foot Anstey’s warm atmosphere and that this is unlikely to change, even as the firm grows’.”
