Take Part In The Taunton Foot Anstey Junior Aquathlon
Jess Wood is just one of the competitors hoping to improve on her performance in the ever popular Taunton Foot Anstey Junior Aquathlon on Sunday 28th September.
Last year she came third in the 13-14 year category but the race is open to young people between 8- 16 years.
An aquathlon is a continuous race over various distances in the disciplines of swimming and running. Competitors race against the clock that starts as they enter the swimming pool and stops as they cross the finishing line after the run.
The competition has five different age categories 8yrs, 9 & 10 yrs, 11& 12yrs, 13 & 14 yrs and 15 & 16 yrs youth category who each swim and run distances according to their category.
This last age category provides a link for talented youngsters to go on from this competition to compete in the challenging Taunton Deane Foot Anstey Triathlon, one of the most popular sporting events in the South West calendar that involves swimming, cycling and running.
Caroline Lewis from the Somerset RC Tri Club committee and mother to two of the competitors said “No one should be shy of competing as the distances for swimming and running increase as the competitors get older. So an eight year swims for 80yds, that four lengths of the Queen’s pool and runs for 600m. We want to encourage children to be active and show them it can be fun and rewarding.
“All the children put in a tremendous amount of effort and have a great time racing against their friends in their own age categories. Maybe we shall see one of them following in the success of our Olympic team in Beijing and competing in London in 2012”.
This year the Aquathlon is sponsored by Taunton solicitors Foot Anstey and will be organised by Tone Leisure, local triathlon club, Somerset RC Tri and Queens College who will provide the venue.
Andrew Hannam, partner at Taunton law firm Foot Anstey said “Our involvement with both the Junior Aquathlon in September and the adult Triathlon in May has built over the past two years. We are really proud to be supporting local talent at grass roots level in this way.
“I am a triathlon competitor and know just how much fun competing in these events can be as well as a way of keeping fit.”
